Colovaginoplasty

Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Colovaginoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct congenital or acquired vaginal anomalies. It is applied in children, especially when vaginal structures need correction due to congenital urogenital anomalies. These procedures aim to correct abnormal connections between the vagina and the colon.

Colovaginoplasty is a rarely performed surgical intervention in children. Congenital urogenital anomalies constitute a small portion of all congenital diseases. The prevalence of these anomalies is low in the general population, and therefore the need for colovaginoplasty is rare. Only children born with congenital urogenital anomalies require such surgical procedures.

Symptoms

Symptoms that necessitate colovaginoplasty are generally related to congenital vaginal anomalies and may include:

  • Pain and discomfort,
  • Difficulties in defecation and urination,
  • Vaginal bleeding,
  • Developmental problems.

Treatment

Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) colovaginoplasty is a shorter procedure with fewer complications and better cosmetic results compared to open surgery. During the operation, a portion of the colon is usually added to the developmentally absent part of the vagina. This creates a vaginal structure that is both functional and appears natural externally.

In children who do not undergo colovaginoplasty when necessary, serious complications may occur, such as:

  • Urinary tract and vaginal infections,
  • Defecation problems and developmental issues,
  • Unhealthy sexual life when reaching adulthood.

After surgery, children are generally monitored in the hospital for a few days. Nutrition and fluid balance are maintained, and intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and a special nutrition plan are applied until the surgical site is protected from infections. The recovery process varies depending on the patient’s age, general health condition, and type of surgery performed.

Rarely, complications such as bleeding, infection, intestinal or vaginal obstruction, and wound healing problems may develop after surgery.

Colovaginoplasty is a rare but important surgical intervention in children. Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment ensure healthy growth and development of the child. Careful monitoring and post-operative care reduce complication risks and support the recovery process. It should be remembered that the main goal is both functionality and cosmetic appearance. Treatment should be managed by a multidisciplinary team involving pediatric endocrinology and pediatric surgery.
