Doç. Dr. Ergun Ergün

Biography

Ergun Ergün was born in 1987 in Denizli, Turkey. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Bursa. In 2005, he began his medical education at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 2011. In 2012, he started working as a research assistant at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, which introduced laparoscopic surgery for children in Turkey. During his student years, he participated in exchange programs for one month in Tanta, Egypt, and for three months in Salamanca, Spain, gaining the opportunity to observe medical practices in different cultures.

In 2017, he earned the title of Pediatric Surgery Specialist. During his years as a research assistant, he contributed to the publication of over 30 national and international articles and more than 50 congress presentations. In the final year of his assistantship, he worked for three months in Wrocław, Poland, with world-renowned expert Prof. Dr. Dariusz Patkowski on inguinal hernia and esophageal atresia. Upon returning to Turkey, he continued to work particularly in these areas. In 2024, he was invited as a speaker at the national pediatric surgery congress for his expertise in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. That same year, he also served as an instructor at a laparoscopic inguinal hernia conference held in Poland.

From 2017 to 2019, he completed his compulsory service as a pediatric surgeon at Ankara Sami Ulus Maternity and Children’s Health Hospital. During this period, he pioneered the development of new techniques for pediatric inguinal hernia repair and contributed to their presentation at international congresses and publication in scientific journals.

In 2019, he returned to Ankara University—where he completed his medical education and specialty training—as a faculty member. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2023. Since then, he has been actively involved in medical education, contributing to the training of more than 20 pediatric surgery residents and teaching medical students.

Areas of Interest

Dr. Ergün currently works as a faculty member at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Surgery. His clinical and academic focus includes:
– Fetal surgery (treatment of unborn babies in the womb),
– Neonatal congenital anomalies (esophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, omphalocele/gastroschisis),
– Liver diseases and transplantation (biliary atresia, liver tumors),
– Inguinal hernia in children.

In 2024, he received the WOFAPS Research Fellowship, awarded to only two young researchers worldwide by the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery. He used this opportunity to work with world-renowned Prof. Dr. Jose Luis Peiro at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (USA) in the field of fetal surgery and congenital anomaly repair.

Scientific Work

Dr. Ergün has served as an instructor in numerous national and international laparoscopic surgery courses, both online and in-person, including live surgical demonstrations.

He has published over 70 articles in national and international journals and has presented nearly 200 papers at various conferences. He has also contributed as a chapter author in multiple academic books.

He speaks advanced English, intermediate Spanish, and basic Polish and Japanese. His personal interests include linguistics, history, and basketball. He currently serves as the coach of the Ankara University Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams
